The best one-handed games for a crowded commute

July 22, 2026 · Nils Bergström

Most of my mobile gaming happens standing on a tram, gripping a rail with one hand and my phone with the other. That rules out a shocking number of games that assume you've got two thumbs and a table.

The trick is a single-input design. Games that map everything to one tap, drag or swipe survive the commute test. Racers with a single steer input, endless runners, and gentle physics games all qualify.

I've found that pacing matters just as much as controls. A game with hard fail states is a nightmare when the tram lurches, so I lean toward titles that let you pause anywhere or forgive the occasional fumble.

If you're building a commute rotation, mix genres so you don't burn out. Something cozy for tired mornings, something snappy for the ride home. Your future self on the platform will thank you.
